Summary
This project addresses the disproportionate exposure of women with learning disabilities to violence, harassment, and abuse, particularly in everyday public and digital spaces. This group is at heightened risk of sexual assault and other forms of harm, yet their experiences are rarely centred in prevention strategies.
A key challenge is that existing violence against women and girls (VAWG) interventions are not designed with their communication needs, lived experiences, or support networks in mind. As a result, many women are left without the tools or confidence to recognise unsafe situations, assert boundaries, or seek help. This has profound consequences in restricting independence, mobility, and participation in public life.
Our work has shown how fear of violence circulates within peer and family networks, shaping everyday decisions such as whether to travel alone or engage socially. Addressing VAWG, therefore, is also about enabling autonomy, dignity, and full social participation.
The project responds by co-creating an accessible, empowering prevention programme that builds confidence and practical knowledge in real-world contexts.
