Summary
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a pervasive threat in the UK and across the world. According to official statistics, more than 200,000 sexual offences were recorded by UK police in England and Wales in 2024/25, and 2.2 million women aged 16+ experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2025.
Against this backdrop, the UK Government’s Safer Streets Mission and cross-government strategy, Freedom from Violence and Abuse, aim to halve violence against women and girls in the next 10 years. Funded by the UKRI’s R&D Missions Accelerator Programme, RISE is an accelerated programme designed to help deliver this aim.
RISE is led by interdisciplinary experts in VAWG at the University of Manchester, with research outputs including:
-
A rapid evidence review of literature on primary prevention
-
Developing an app on women runners’ public safety
-
Evaluating multi-agency approaches to prevent perpetrators from reoffending
-
Analysing Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHRs) for matricide
RISE will also engage with stakeholders - including VAWG specialists from research, policing and the third sector - to share best practice, strengthen working relationships and lay the groundwork for future research, innovation and funding opportunities.
