FAQ on the Use of AI in Research

The AI working group of the ESRC doctoral training partnership training network (DTP-TN)

This FAQ has been developed by an interdisciplinary team of academics who all have roles within DTP-TN, a network of training leads for the doctoral training partnerships (DTPs) funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and who formed the AI working group of that network.

The rationale for its production and format was twofold:

1. There is a sense within the social science research community that AI will have an increasing impact on how we conduct our research, but we lack a framework for accommodating that. This issue is particularly acute for doctoral students and other early career researchers whose careers will be entirely within the AI era.

2. Any advice that we could give in a static document would almost certainly date badly, and therefore the format needed to be suitable for being revised and updated, and its style needed to be one of aiming to prompt thinking rather than provide answers.

How to provide input to future versions

The FAQ went through several iterations before we arrived at the current version. We know that it is still imperfect! And we very much welcome and indeed positively encourage further critical feedback. You can either do this by completing this form, or by adding comments to the document, which can also be uploaded using the same form.

Finally, if you have a question that is not currently contained in the FAQ, please do submit it here. It will be deliberated by the group with specific expert input where that is needed.
