About the event
What is quantum computing, really - and why does it matter now?
In this fast-paced, TED-style talk, Dr Arnab Kumar Biswas introduces the core ideas (qubits, superposition, entanglement) and explains what quantum computers can and can't do. We'll cut through the hype to look at real-world progress in hardware and error correction, why NIST finalized the first post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards, and how the UK's National Quantum Strategy frames the opportunity and the risks.
Security is front and center: we'll explore how Shor's and Grover's algorithms impact today's cryptography, what the new PQC algorithms (ML-KEM/Kyber, ML-DSA/Dilithium, SLH-DSA/SPHINCS+) mean for organizations, and where quantum protocols like QKD fit-using current UK trials as examples. You'll leave with concrete steps to start (or accelerate) your quantum-safe journey, plus time for Q&A.
About Arnab
Dr. Arnab Kumar Biswas is a Lecturer in data security at the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT), Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland. He holds a PhD from Indian Institute of Science, investigating the security solutions in a Multiprocessor System-on-Chip from different level of abstractions. He has collaborated on several national and international research projects as a research fellow at NTU Singapore, UBS France, and NUS Singapore.
His current research interests are in Network Security including Internet-of-Things and edge network, embedded system security from Hardware-software co-design, and efficient implementation of post-quantum privacy preserving machine learning in various environments.
