Attendees: 17 participants, including 10 carefully-selected experts, JournoTECH team members and 2 additional facilitators.
Project overview
JournoTECH's SPRITE+ Innovation Forum brought together experts from technology, cybersecurity, journalism, academia, research, product design, governance, and organisational leadership to explore a common question: how can organisations build trustworthy technology from the inside out?
While much attention is given to the technical aspects of artificial intelligence and digital innovation, organisations often lack practical guidance on how trust, identity, privacy, security, governance, ethics, and organisational culture should work together. The forum was designed to address this gap by creating a collaborative space where participants could share expertise and co develop ideas for a practical organisational framework that places trust at the centre of innovation.
The discussions explored how responsible innovation should extend beyond software development to include organisational structures, leadership, governance, decision making, risk management, data protection, and accountability. Participants examined the relationships between technical teams and non technical departments and discussed how every function within an organisation contributes to building trustworthy digital products and services.
A key outcome of the forum was the development of the foundations for the JournoTECH Trust, Centred Organisational Innovation Framework. The framework brings together Trust, Identity, Privacy and Security principles with organisational governance, responsible artificial intelligence, ethical decision making, operational resilience, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Rather than focusing solely on technology, it provides practical guidance for organisations seeking to embed responsible innovation throughout their entire operations.
The forum also identified the need for practical tools that organisations of different sizes can adopt. As a result, JournoTECH has develop a suite of supporting resources, including governance models, organisational architecture guidance, responsible Al guidance, digital responsibility tools, and implementation checklists.
The Innovation Forum demonstrated the value of bringing together people from different disciplines to address complex challenges surrounding trustworthy technology. It established new connections between researchers and practitioners, generated practical ideas for future collaboration, and created a strong foundation for future research, funding applications, training programmes, and organisational innovation focused on responsible and trustworthy digital technologies.
Objectives
The project successfully achieved its original objectives.
Objective 1: To design a trust centred organisational framework for building ethical and secure technology organisations.
Achieved. The forum enabled participants from multiple disciplines to co develop the foundations of the JournoTECH Trust Centred Organisational Innovation Framework, which is currently being finalised for publication.
Objective 2: To embed Trust, Identity, Privacy and Security principles into organisational design.
Achieved. Discussions explored how Trust, Identity, Privacy and Security principles should extend beyond technical systems into governance, leadership, organisational processes, product development, data management, and decision making.
Objective 3: To connect global interdisciplinary expertise into a collaborative design process.
Achieved. The forum brought together expertise from academia, cybersecurity, journalism, artificial intelligence, product design, governance, research, and organisational leadership, creating valuable interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchange.
Objective 4: To create practical tools that can be used beyond the forum.
Achieved and ongoing. The forum informed the development of practical outputs including the Trust Centred Organisational Innovation Framework, governance guidance, implementation resources, and organisational design tools. These resources are currently being prepared for publication through the JournoTECH website.
There were no significant changes to the original project objectives. The overall vision remained consistent throughout the project. The main development was the refinement of the proposed framework through collaborative discussions during the Innovation Forum, ensuring that the final outputs are informed by practical experience and interdisciplinary expertise.
Outcomes & outputs
The Innovation Forum generated a number of immediate and longer term outputs that will continue to shape JournoTECH's work beyond the funded project.
Key outputs include:
Development of the JournoTECH Trust Centred Organisational Innovation Framework, which provides practical guidance for embedding Trust, Identity, Privacy and Security principles across organisational governance, product development, operations, and innovation (see below).
Development of a supporting implementation toolkit, including governance guidance, responsible Al guidance, organisational architecture resources, digital responsibility tools, implementation checklists, and practical templates that organisations can adapt to their own context.
Establishment of new interdisciplinary collaborations between researchers and practitioners working across cybersecurity, journalism, artificial intelligence, governance, product design, and organisational leadership.
Creation of a practical roadmap for future collaborative research, funding applications, and knowledge exchange activities centred on trustworthy and responsible innovation.
Generation of qualitative insights into the organisational challenges associated with embedding trust, privacy, security, and responsible innovation across different organisational functions.
Strengthening JournoTECH's growing community of practice focused on responsible digital innovation and trustworthy technology.
Publication of the Trust Centred Organisational Innovation Framework and accompanying toolkit on the JournoTECH website (see below), future webinars and workshops introducing the framework, and collaborative grant applications that build on the outcomes of the Innovation Forum.
