About the event
On Tuesday 21st April, we were joined by 28 attendees from the UK and Africa for our joint workshop with JournoTECH "Immersive Technologies in Journalism: Risks, Trust and Ethical Challenges".
The event began with an introductory talk on journalism of the future by Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi, Chief Innovation Officer at JournoTECH, and short presentations by Anya Emmons on the current capabilities of XR technologies (Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality and Augmented Reality), SPRITE+ Co-Director Emma Barrett on the XR risk landscape, and SPRITE+ Research Fellow Salman Khan on what the literature says about TIPSS (trust, identity, privacy, safety and security) risks in Immersive Journalism.
This was followed by breakout group discussions where participants, drawing on their experience as journalists, contributed their insights on the potential benefits and risks of Immersive Journalism.
Thank you to all participants for attending and thinking together on the future of XR in journalism, and to the JournoTECH team for partnering with us in making this brilliant event happen. Participant insights will be translated into a working paper and other outputs - stay tuned!
