Digital Twins and TIPSS Innovation Forum

SPRITE+ and DTNet+ (the Digital Twinning NetworkPlus) held a two-day Innovation Forum in Manchester convening interdisciplinary experts to critically examine the opportunities and risks of digital twins.

Through keynote provocations, collaborative working groups, and strategic horizon-scanning, we mapped the evolving landscape and set out a research and policy agenda for responsible innovation.

"TIPSS-by-design cannot simply mean taking five established “by-design” approaches and applying them alongside one another. Digital twins bring those elements together in a particularly complicated way because a twin is not just a representation of something. It may also inform decisions, initiate interventions and change in response to what happens in the world.

So, the practical question is not simply whether each TIPSS dimension has been considered in the development of the twin. It is whether we have deliberately designed and governed the connections and tensions between them."

Prof. Mark Elliot, SPRITE+ Director

"Understanding how issues relating to security, privacy, identity, and trust are dealt with digital twins is crucial for ensuring that future twinning applications can be effectively deployed and assured.

This joint SPRITE+ and DTNet+ event is a great example of how bringing together a diverse range of experts can help shape a more focused conversation on the relevant issues. The event will definitely contribute to shaping the future research agenda, and I expect a whole range of new collaborations to be developed as a direct result of the meeting."

Prof. David Wagg, DTNet+ Organiser
