Trustworthy Two-Way AR Books: Privacy, Safety and Security Foundations for Sign Language Learning
Oct - Nov 2026
Academic Partner: Prof. Mohamed Khamis, University of Glasgow
Industry/Public Sector Partner: VIKA Books
Project overview
VIKA Books creates AR-enhanced books that help all children and families, both Deaf and hearing, learn through 3D content and British Sign Language videos.
This secondment will map the privacy, safety and security risks this creates, including recording children in homes/classrooms, capturing bystanders, storing gesture/video data, unclear consent, over-trust in automated feedback, and spoofed or inappropriate AR content. We will use risk mapping and collect empirical data about stakeholder concerns through an online survey and a focus group to produce practical design guidance for trustworthy child-centred AR learning.
Objectives and deliverables
The project will address three research questions:
What privacy, safety and security concerns arise when AR books for children move from one-way content delivery to two-way recording and feedback?
How do parents and relevant adult stakeholders perceive the acceptability of recording children practising signs in home, school and shared settings?
What design safeguards are needed to support trustworthy future features such as gesture feedback, avatar-based correction, depth sensing or automated sign-language support?
Deliverables will include: a data-flow/risk map; empirical findings from the questionnaire; qualitative insights from focus groups/interviews; practical design recommendations; and a 1-page final report and roadmap.
