SPRITE+ Lunch and Learn: What are Privacy Enhancing Technologies?

While people often express concern about privacy online, some do engage in protective behaviour. In this talk, we present results from a series of studies investigating the methods and technologies that people employ to protect their privacy online — in the form of patterns of protective behaviour that emerge across a large sample. We then discuss their perception of different types of privacy-enhancing technologies, the barriers to adoption of the more sophisticated types, and the support people need.
